Mechanism of Action and Physiological Effects of Silabaal® on Plants

Silabaal® is based on tribomechanically activated calcite (calcium carbonate, CaCO₃) combined with zeolite. Through this special activation process, the mineral components are broken down into very fine particles, creating a particularly large active surface area.

When applied to the plant’s surface, the fine mineral particles can come into contact with the leaf tissue and, in particular, with the stomata (pores). This enables direct interaction between the mineral components and the plant—independent of uptake through the soil.

The calcium bound in the calcite and the other mineral components can support various plant physiological processes. Calcium plays a particularly important role in the stability and function of plant cell structures. Furthermore, calcium is closely linked to the regulation of the stomata and thus to the control of the plant’s water balance.

Under suitable conditions, the application of Silabaal® can help support the plants’ resilience to high temperatures and other abiotic stress factors. Observations and experimental results also indicate an improvement in various plant physiological parameters.

These include, among others:

  • More intense green coloration and improved leaf development
  • Greater resistance to heat and drought stress; improved plant vitality
  • Improved plant vitality;
  • A potential improvement in fruit quality
  • Increased levels of certain plant compounds
  • And changes in the dry matter content of the fruit.

In crops such as tomatoes, an adequate supply of calcium can also help reduce physiological disorders such as blossom end rot, provided that these disorders are caused by an insufficient or disrupted supply of calcium to the fruit.

Studies on treated plants also show changes in leaf and fruit physiology, including chloroplast development, polyphenol content, and dry matter content.

These results suggest that the application of Silabaal® is not aimed exclusively at nutrient supply, but can support the plant’s physiological performance and its adaptation to environmental stress.

 Silabaal® thus takes a direct, mineral-based approach: The goal is to reach the plant through the leaf surface and support its natural physiological processes—with the aim of achieving a more vigorous plant, higher stress tolerance, and improved product quality.
